How to become a Project Management Professional (PMP)

What is a PMP certification?

The PMP (Project Management Professional) certificate is the most popular and widely recognized project management certificate in virtually every country of the world. To obtain such a certificate, you first have to pass a special exam, and then the final certificate is issued by the PMI Project Management Institute. The headquarters of the PMI are located in the USA. It also has service centres and offices in India, Singapore, Ireland, China, Belgium, Argentina and the UAE.

A certified PMP (Project Management Specialist) is a globally recognized project management professional. Holding a PMP certificate means that you understand the global concept of project management and can speak the same language as professionals from other countries and organizations around the world. The PMP certificate can be compared to the knowledge of English; anyone who wishes to pursue a career in an international company and handle projects must be able to speak it.

Obtaining a PMP certificate is recommended for project and program managers and project administrators, as well as employees and project office managers. This certification will also help those engaged in project activities at different levels to increase their level of knowledge and move up the career ladder.

Benefits and advantages of PMP certification

The PMP certificate signifies that you have the necessary professional knowledge and specific practical experience in the field of project management and that you have mastered the tools and principles of project management as outlined in PMI PMBoK. Here are the key benefits of obtaining a PMP certificate:

  • This certificate offers a significant advantage in the market of highly qualified project personnel because it indicates that you (as a professional) are competent and work in compliance with Project Management industry standards.
  • Unlike other certificates targeted at a specific region/country/jurisdiction, PMP is a truly global standard. A certified PMP specialist can work in almost any industry, with any methodology, and in any country around the world.
  • PMP certification also provides an advantage in the form of higher wages and potential income. As a rule, those who have earned a PMP certificate receive higher salary compared to similar specialists who do not have PMP certification.
  • Benefits for employers – if the key project managers in your team have this certificate, your company will be much more likely to complete its projects within the specified time and budget and reach the goals set. Having a PMP certified employee guarantees greater stability and business performance.

How to apply for PMP certification

Those who have completed higher education (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree) or secondary education, have been formally trained in project management for at least 35 hours, and who have sufficient practical experience in project management may apply for PMP certification. For applicants with higher education, project management experience should be at least 4,500 hours over 36 non-overlapping months. Applicants with secondary education only should have at least 7,500 hours of experience over 60 non-overlapping months.

The certification process begins with either self-preparation or attending a special PMP Certification Exam Preparation course such as, for example, the course offered by Atton Institute, UAE. Once you complete such a course, you will obtain a special approval number which then can be used to apply for the exam on the PMI website. The completed application is checked by PMI for accuracy, after which an applicant receives an invitation to proceed with the exam (subject to certification fee payment). As a rule, immediately after payment for the certification, you will receive a letter from PMI acknowledging your application to the PMP exam. Sometimes an application may be subject to a selective PMI audit. In such a case, the applicant will need to provide copies of additional supporting documents, as well as evidence of the contact persons indicated in the “Practical Experience” section of the application. Within a year from the date of exam admission, the applicant has may make three attempts to pass the exam.

This certification exam includes 200 situational questions with multiple-choice answers. The exam is mainly administered at special Prometric certification testing centers. It is held in English, but it is also possible to order a translation into one of 13 languages. If you are taking the exam online, you will receive your results immediately after pressing the “Complete Exam” button. Your local Prometric center will then issue a confirmation that you have successful passed the exam, and after some time a certificate will arrive by mail, at which point you will become a PMP certified specialist.

How to pass the PMP exam effortlessly

While preparing for the PMP exam, you can take in one of two approaches: prepare by yourself, or take a special exam preparation course. If you choose self-training, you can find quite a lot of study materials on the Internet. The main resource for project management training is A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) from PMI. You can purchase this book from the PMI online store. PMI also offers textbooks, teaching aids, and other materials on project management fundamentals.

The second option, attending a special exam preparation course, is preferable for those who value their time and do not want to spend it searching for training materials and independently studying all of the info and exam requirements. In an exam preparation course, professional traders will provide you with the best opportunity to prepare for the exam and will help you to work with practical examples similar to the ones on the actual exam.
