While elders have their proven and tested ways in project management, millennials are also having their way and are bringing new ideas on how to handle a project – leveraging advancements in technology and offers additional priority in the economic, social, and ecological factors of things.
Alex Shoootman, the CEO of an enterprise job and project management provider of the cloud-based named Workfront, once said that working with millennials is crucial. Seeing how powerful digital natives are nowadays, it’s impossible not to see an increase in their power and authority in the years to come.
He compared it to a foreigner and a native person in a particular society. There are surely differences, and these will create a huge impact in the workplace as he said. Here’s an example of a difference, those who are tech natives have an unbiased view of the workplace.
These natives love teleworking and have a flexible time when working. Whenever these people make up work, they want to do it in a coffee shop on the weekend or even while on vacation.
Aside from that, natives also love multitasking. They get easily bored that’s why they like task-switching more, and they want to learn skills that are ‘just-in-time.’ According to him, millennials can also interact with almost everyone and can easily network with others.
Flexible, task-switching, skills that are ‘just-in-time,’ can quickly adapt to the crowd, and is equitable – some of the qualities that are not present in the work environment we’re currently at right now.
Why should we consider the role of millennials in project handling?
According to Eric Bergman, the vice president of PM (product management) of a professional automation service company named Changepoint, millennials will fill fifty percent (50%) of the world’s workforce by the year 2020.
And in 2030, it will rise to seventy-five percent (75%). Eric also believes that companies will now focus more on the employees and their needs to solve the issues in productivity and the quality of the service that they provide.
In the eyes of the millennials, how do they visualize their role in project management and how does it affect the company’s goals?
“Today’s millennials has been labeled as the self-service generation. You see, they see their life like this: after finishing college, they need to look for a stable job and establish their name in their field.
They need to gain relevant experiences to get to the top. And they also know that for them to reach their goals, they need to have a strong determination and a strong self-discipline,” says Patrick Panuncillon, the merging partner of Print Meister, one of the companies that offer high-calibre yet cheap business cards, brochures, catalogs and any print media materials.
Panuncillon, also a millennial who’s in his mid-20s, also believes that millennials do not settle for mediocrity. They do not only meet what others are expecting them to do but they also exceed it. Their flexibility can be their great asset as they can quickly adapt to changes in the workplace.
As a matter of fact, he also says that they tend to become more determined whenever somebody challenges them, which he thinks, is best when from bulky flyer printing orders to managing a huge project since they see every project as an opportunity rather than an obstacle.
We cannot deny it. Millennials are bringing fresh perspectives and advanced approaches to project management. Businesses should know how to control the contributions of these people and identify their talents and potentials for the betterment of the company.
Since technology is already present in this people’s DNA, it is safe to say that they have a huge chance of outshining the previous generations, making it hard for us to judge them that they are inexperienced and unaware of the things in this fast-paced digital world.
