Introducing the Project Management Institute (PMI)

The PMI was founded in 1969 at the Georgia Institute of Technology as a non-profit organization. Among its objectives during its early years were to foster or promote professionalism in the field of project management, provide a forum or assembly where people can exchange and discuss PM problems, solutions and applications, help develop common terminology, and provide guidelines in career development, among others. Included in its objectives was to coordinate industrial and academic research efforts. In 1996, it produced the first PM Body of Knowledge. The fifth edition is the latest edition of the PMBOK. Today, the PMI is the world’s leading membership association for the PM profession.

PMP Certification and more

The Project Management Institute offers certifications to help prepare professionals meet the demands of projects and excel in any industry in the world. The Project Management Professional (PMP) is the most recognized credential in project management. People with this credential are sought after to lead projects all over the world. They can work in any industry, with any methodology and in any type of geography. Would you like to become a PMP? These articles will get you started! The PMI also offers certifications in Program Management (PgMP) and Portfolio Management (PfMP). Some more others are Certified Associate in PM (CAPM), Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA), Agile (PMI-ACP), Risk Management (PMI-RMP), and Scheduling (PMI-SP). The Institute publishes its certification process which provides details for the 5 steps. Every certification also has its own set of prerequisites for a person to be eligible to take the exam.

Learning

The Project Management Institute continues to provide not only a forum for its members and project professionals around the world through seminars and other events. It also continues to guide people in developing their PM careers through various learning and training opportunities. The PMI hosts articles and case studies about project management and related topics. It also offers research, insight, and thought leadership about the latest ideas from industry leaders. The Institute also offers online courses and webinars, tools and templates. It awards the Registered Education Provider designation to organizations that meet their standards for quality and effectiveness.

PMBOK Guide and Standards

The PMI develops and issues standards that is recognized as the foundation for PM knowledge. These foundational standards cover the areas of project, program, and portfolio management, as well as the organizational approach to project management. The PMBOK Guide (Project Management Body of Knowledge Fifth Edition) includes best practices and is the industry standard for all things project management. This latest PMBOK Guide is for every serious project management professional or for people in other management fields that see the practice’s importance and value in their line of work or career.
