ClickUp and Asana are both excellent project management tools and deciding which is right for you can be challenging. Both have a wide range of features and tools that can help you manage tasks, collaborate with your team, and stay organized.

To figure out which project management tool is best for your team, let’s talk about both and see how they compare when it comes to project management features, individual productivity management, ease of use, integration, and price.

What is Asana?

Asana is a cloud-based project management tool you can use on your browser, mobile device, or desktop. It has a clean and minimalist interface that’s a joy to use regardless of your industry.

Used by 80% of Fortune 100 companies, it features automation, real-time insights, goal management, and more.

What is ClickUp?

ClickUp is a project management tool with advanced task management, time tracking, and organizational features. You can use it on your browser, PC, Mac, and mobile device.

ClickUp labels itself as the “one app to replace them all.” You can use ClickUp to manage multiple teams and projects in one platform.

Project Management Features

Tasks in ClickUp and Asana can be connected to more than one project list, and you can add descriptions, due dates, persons in charge, subtasks, files, and messages for each task. You can also indicate relationships like dependencies between tasks to ensure prerequisites are prepared accordingly.

Asana and ClickUp give their users multiple options to view task lists, but ClickUp offers more options than its competitor. By default, Asana doesn’t offer time tracking—you’ll need an integration for that—while ClickUp lets you record work time even if you want to skip the integrations.

Custom fields are available for more platforms, but ClickUp provides more options than Asana. Both project management tools offer automation as well. This way, you can streamline repetitive workflow processes, so you and your team can focus on more significant activities.

Individual Productivity

ClickUp offers a Home screen that summarizes several details: tasks due today and overdue, comments, tasks done and delegated, and a calendar that can be synced with Google Calendar.

Asana provides something similar to Home with My Tasks. However, on My Tasks, you can view them as a list, on a board, on a calendar, or as a compilation of files. Asana’s Home page also gives you an overview of your projects, frequent collaborators, and tasks.

Ease of Use

Asana offers a clean, well-designed interface that feels welcoming even for beginners. This makes it suitable even if some team members aren’t as tech-savvy as others.

ClickUp tends to lean towards a boxy interface for its design which can make it look a little more intimidating. However, its customer service is beneficial. You can always request assistance in case you encounter issues.

Both Asana and ClickUp offer optimized templates for many industries and needs. And customizability is available for both software, with ClickUp having an advantage.

Asana: Integrations

Asana and Clickup both have extensive integrations for communication, file management, finance and human resources, software development, productivity, marketing, and more. However, Asana also has security and compliance applications such as Transcend and Splunk that provide an additional layer of security to the information stored in Asana.

For app developers, Asana freely shares its application programming interface (API). This way, you can integrate the software as you see fit and continue to take advantage of its benefits on your own terms.

Pricing

A free forever plan is available for both ClickUp and Asana with unlimited use of its essential features: projects, tasks, chat, and comments. However, to maximize its features, ClickUp offers three paid tiers and an Enterprise plan customizable to your organization’s needs.

ClickUp Pricing Structure

Asana’s pricing structure is a bit simpler. It offers two paid tiers aside from the Enterprise tier. The Premium package is created for teams or small companies, while the Business package is ideal for multiple portfolios and initiatives.

Monthly or annual payment is available for both platforms, with yearly costs amounting to a discounted monthly rate.

Which Is Better for Your Team?

ClickUp and Asana offer intuitive interfaces, custom views, and powerful automation tools. They also have great features, like Gantt charts, to help you stay on track. With a focus on collaboration, both software tools allow you to assign tasks, comment on projects and get updates from team members.

Having been in the market for longer, Asana works more smoothly and offers a higher price tag than ClickUp. However, ClickUp can be a great tool to embrace for cost efficiency.

Try Hive Instead

If you’re looking for a project management solution that has the layout of Asana and ClickUp with more collaboration-focused features and a combination of the best features from both options, consider Hive as an alternative.

How It Stacks Up

Collaborative Features: Compared to Asana and ClickUp, Hive offers users a wider variety of collaborative tools, especially for users who are looking to consolidate their tech stack. While Hive offers a variety of integrations for collaborative tools, such as Slack or Zoom, it includes video calling, instant messaging, and workspace updates in real-time, all within the Hive interface itself.

Focus Time: Hive is unique in offering a “focus status” setting that mutes all notifications and messages for a predetermined period of time. Because Asana, ClickUp, and Hive are all known for being notification-heavy platforms, the focus time feature adds extra appeal to Hive’s feature-rich and easy-to-use interface.

Onboarding and Education: While the interface layout and learning curve of Hive, Asana, and ClickUp are all similar, Hive offers extensive onboarding and education resources, from online training, webinars, FAQs, and even a request form for new features in future product updates.
